Simple…it seems that not all of my emails get delivered.  Why is this? You know how when you create a contact form in PHP and you have to Spoof the headers to say the email is coming from that person…even though it is not? Well, a ton of spam destroying boxes out there don’t really like that.  In fact, chances are PLENTY of your emails being sent are not evening making it to the intended recipient.

What I really need is a reliable email delivery service that I can extend off of Drupal so i know that my emails are being delivered. I ran across (thanks to a good buddy of mine) DNS Exit with provides a slick mail relay outbound service. *The service can be also used as Smart Host for your MS Exchange server that having problems to send emails to AOL/Yahoo/Hotmail addresses.

So anyways, the service cost some money, but it is worth it in the end if you want to be sure that your emails are getting delivered.

So now that is ready to go, the next step is to turn on SMTP Authentication Support in Drupal.  The module allows Drupal to bypass the PHP mail() function (and also doesn’t require you to configure sendmail to use SMTP instead of sendmail).  This module requires you to also grab a copy of Phpmailer, which contains all of the classes needed to send an smtp message.  All of the instructions are in the readme file…but as an overview here is what you have to do:

1.  Copy the files included in the tarball into a directory named "smtp" in
    your Drupal sites/all/modules/ directory.
2.  Download the PHPMailer package (the URL is listed in REQUIREMENTS section f the README.txt file) and place it in a directory named "phpmailer" in
    your <drupal-root>/sites/all/modules/smtp directory.
3.  Login as site administrator.
4.  Enable the SMTP Authentication Support module on the Administer -> Site
    building -> Modules page.
5.  Fill in required settings on the Administer -> Site configuration -> SMTP
    Authentication Support page.

That is pretty much it.  Now that will cover all core emailing tools, but you know how Drupal is…so easy to let you write your own PHP code.  You may be using a custom form that doesn’t use the core Drupal mailing routines.  If that is the case, well I’ve come to your rescue.  Below is a quick and dirty SMTP mail doo-hickey (some call it a mailing class…this one is from Sendmail:

Out of the box, the Drupal administration section is hard to grasp.  So many options, so many links, so much terminology.  However after attending the meeting i was able to see that there are quite a few modules that can be plugged in to change the look and feel of the administration section of Drupal.

If you really want to see what Drupal has to offer AND you life in the Pittsburgh area, I strongly suggest heading to the Pittsburgh Drupal User Group (Meet Up) website to keep updated.

I think the next step for me, obviously is to see how I can take Drupal and run with it to be an SEO powerhouse to promote my chiseled jaw secrets :)

• You can use the page to upload a malicious script (asp, aspx, php), such as a root kit
• You can use the root kit to gain local access to the server box and destroy things
• You can upload images and files to be used for a Warez storage site

It is easy to find this file, all you have to do is type in the path to the upload page in Google and you will find a ton of websites using the editor.

If your site is getting indexed, make sure you update your robots.txt file to include a disallow for indexing for that path. 

Also, if you are using local NT username and passwords, you must instill a strict password policy.  You may want to even place directory level security if you are using IIS.  Using simple usernames and passwords will only get you into more trouble!

I’ve used sites like CBMall and BANS in the past, but this application actually gives me total control of my affiliate links.  Plus it is so friggin awesome because for every category keyword you give it, it creates a keyword-rich URL and actual pages for each, yes I said each, product.

Out of the box, Joomla is not compatible with Live Writer, however I did find a few tools to get it to work.  Although it is not flawless it does do the trick.  The biggest issue is that you can’t select categories from within Live Writer. 

You have to set up a new weblog account for each category on your Joomla site.  So essentially, posting to a specific category requires posting to a different weblog.

So to get things moving you need to first

1. grab the Movable Type XML-RPC plugin.  This provides the API for Live Writer to post to Joomla. Be forewarned…the plugin site is not very easy to follow.  In fact I was downloading and installing the wrong plugin and couldn’t figure out why it wasn’t working :) duh!  The actual download link is this.

   The file archive contains two items:

• Movabletype mambot (zipped)
• XMLRPC connector (zipped)

  You don’t have to unzip the Mambot, but you do have to unzip the XMLRPC file, which will give you a directory called xmlrpc.

2. The next thing you do is move that xmlrpc directory to the root of your joomla website.

3. Install the Mambot by going to your Joomla admin page, select the Installation/Mambots menu item.  Browse and select the Movabletype Mambot.  Click Upload File & Install

4. Startup Windows Live Writer and from the Weblog menu, select Add Weblog Account.

5. Select the Another weblog service option > Next > Enter the URL and admin user information for your Joomla site.

Next, select the weblog type as Movable Type API. 

Enter the URL of your XMLRPC directory (which should resemble something like this: http://www.yourjoomlasite.com/xmlrpc/index.php)

Now you are ready to start posting.  One more thing, you may want to pick up the Frontpage Auto Update component.  Otherwise, when you post a new item, it will not automatically be set to display on the homepage.

If you are like me, you love to post to your blogs with Windows Live Writer.

If you are like me you are steaming mad that Microsoft has yet to release a version of Live Writer that runs on XP Pro 64 bit!

Well finally I can tell you all that I am actually running Windows Live Writer on my PC running XP Pro 64bit.  Well, sort of…actually. 

The solution is this:

1. Download Microsoft Virtual PC 2007 (which is free).
2. Grab handy the regular XP 32bit version from MSDN.
3. Install MS Virtual PC and create a virtual machine for Windows XP.
4. Install Windows Live Writer 2008 within your Windows XP Virtual PC.

But Tony, what the heck, where am I supposed to get a copy of XP 32bit?!

Well, if you ARE like me, and you ARE a Windows software engineer, then chances are you have an MSDN subscription. 

Virtual PC 2007 is pretty slick as you can actually freeze a virtual PC Windows session, burn it to ISO and the install it to another machine. 

Pretty cool for backing up your Windows images without having to worry about reinstalling some of those cool programs you’ve installed and collected over the years.

Yes, I know there are plenty of you asking, why not use VM Ware?  Well, Virtual PC is soo much lighter and it goes much easier on your HD space.

I’ve decided to call the “experience” Friendspot.  Just a nice collaberative environement for people to start a blog like Wordpress, create a photo sharing gallery and to also participate in forums.  No, I am not really taking on Wordpress and Flickr, but I would like to see how something like that operates.  What better way through experiementation.

Signing up through the site gives all users their own blog, image gallery and user account to use in the forums. I’ve set one up just to see how the thing works.  You can even use themes for everything…forum, blog, gallery.  really neato stuff.

The solution came from incorporating two already really popular tools, lastRSS and Exec-PHP.  However I was hitting brick walls getting this stuff to work together.  Finally my buddy Julien pointed me in the right direction.  His example sites using eBay RSS and CJ were just incredible, and the implementation of the scripts was simple…after going through about 10 back and fourth emails.  So to make this an easy task for you, I’ve compiled the process of what I learned from Julien’s blog post and from our emails.

Since the main purpose of this is to generate some cash using the eBay RSS feed and CJ, you need to first go grab your CJ account (that is if you don’t already have one).  After then then you can continue :)

1. Log into you Commission Junction account and point to Account/Website Settings and then select the website you wish to tie this venture to.  After selecting from the drop down, write down (or past this to notepad) the PID number.  You’ll need this in order to tie your account to the eBay RSS feed.
2. Download the Exec-PHP plugin for Wordpress here and then Activate it in your Wordpress administration panel.  Exec-PHP allows you to enter PHP code within your blog postings.  This is necessary in order to pull in the eBay RSS feed into your blog.
3. Click Users in your Wordpress admin screen and scroll to the bottom to Personal Options and un-check the Use the visual rich editor when editing.  I’ve personally only been able to successfully enter PHP code within the postings when turning off the rich editor. 
4. Go to the eBay advanced search page in order to get your customized RSS feed.
5. Enter what stuff you would like to pull back from the eBay RSS feed to use on your blog.
6. Enter in the PID number that you copied from step 1.
7. Click the search button to generate the desired eBay RSS feed.  Scroll down to bottom of the results page and look for the RSS button.  Right-click and copy the Link Location of the button.  Paste this HUGE URL into notepad for later use.
8. Download LastRSS and unzip it.  Upload lastRSS.php to your blogs root directory on your server. Create a folder called cache and make it readable and writeable (chmod 777).
9. Create a new page or posting in Wordpress and title it anything you’d like.  For the actual post, enter the following code (keeping in mind that the BIG RED BOLD TEXT that reads ENTER THAT BIG eBAY RSS URL should be replaced with the URL you had already copied to your notepad):

10. Go ahead and post the article and you should see the results.  *note: Some webhosting places have fopen(); turned off for “security” reasons.  If this condition exists for you then chances are this thing will not work for you.

• http://www.buffalochicken.com <-thought it was a good place to pull in some hot sauce related buy-now deals.
• http://www.your-timeshare.com <- this one is pulling in Yahoo news items AND eBay RSS auction feeds.
